Course Expectations for English I

Classroom Expectations:
  • Be respectful to others and to yourself
  • Always put forth your best effort
  • Bring materials to class every day, without exception
  • Follow all school policies and procedures

 

Common Core anchor standards and high school grade-specific standards work in tandem to define college and career readiness expectations.  There are standards for reading literature and informational text; writing; speaking and listening; and language.
 
Grading:
  • Grammar  & Writing                                         15%
  • Vocabulary, Grammar, Targeted Writing:                              20 %
  • Quizzes:                                                                           25 %
  • Tests/Essays/Projects:                                                        40%


Vocabulary:
Vocabulary is an important part of the English I curriculum.  Each week students will complete a vocabulary lesson which includes, completing exercises, writing stories, and taking a quiz.  Flashcards are suggested, but not required.
 
Literature:
Literature in 9th grade is organized by genre.  Some of the genres we will cover this semester include the short story, novel (book reports), poetry, the epic, drama, and non-fiction (such as biographies and historical pieces). 

Writing:
As always, writing is a consistent part of the English I curriculum.  The writing in English I  includes creative writing, book reports, personal essays, and literary essays.
