Journals


Journals are assigned on Monday and due on the Friday of that week. 
Journals in red are from the first grading period and may no longer be completed for a late grade.

1st & 2nd Periods (English II-S):

Journal #1 (Due 9/1): What are your expectations for English II? What are your fears or concerns? What about the class seems to spark your interest?

Journal #2 (Due 9/15): English II studies world literature. Complete the following statement and explain your reply. It is/is not important to encourage diversity around the world and in the United States because ____. 

Journal #3 (Due 9/22): Think about Oedipus and his fate.  Do you believe in free will and choices, or has your destiny already been decided at birth? Or do you think there’s a combination of the two, and you can control some aspects of your life but not others?

Journal #4 (Due 10/6): What's something you've done of which you're proud, even if others wouldn't find it particularly noteworthy?

Journal #5 (Due 10/13): What is an event going on in the world, the US, or locally right now that you think is significant? Why is it important to you? 

Journal #6 (Due 10/20):  Free Write


Journal #7 (Due 11/3): Is life fair? What exactly does “fair” mean? Explain your answer.

Journal #8 (Due 12/1): Write a letter to school faculty (teachers or principals) about your concerns regarding upcoming exams. Address your worries, your strengths, and your suggestions for making the experience less stressful. However, keep in mind your own level of responsibility during exam week and the semester as a whole (ie: no As just for showing up) and state requirements the school cannot control. 

ACE - Song of Your Choice (Due 12/8) - How does the artist’s use of language enhance the theme of the song? Cite examples from the text (lyrics) to support your answer.
*Literary Devices – SOUND DEVICES, FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE, POETRY ELEMENTS --> simile, metaphor, personification, imagery, alliteration, repetition, rhyme scheme, parallelism, hyperbole, connotations, allusions, assonance, etc. 
*You can also use the rhetorical appeals, since it said “artist’s use of language.”
*Don’t forget to talk about the theme.
*You need to mention the artist and the song title in ACE.

Journal #9 (Due 12/15) – Do you think you would have been as resourceful, brave, and lucky as Arn or Gabi to survive during the Cambodian or Guatemalan genocides? Why or why not? 

4th Period (English II-H):

Journal #1 (Due 9/1): What are your expectations for English II? What are your fears or concerns? What about the class seems to spark your interest?

Journal #2 (Due 9/15): English II studies world literature. Complete the following statement and explain your reply. It is/is not important to encourage diversity around the world and in the United States because ____.

Journal #3 (Due 9/22): Compare high school to the Anthem society. In what ways are they similar? In what ways are they different? Overall, does a public high school setting promote individualism or being part of a group? What type of student/kid do you think Equality would have been if he had been raised in our society and gone to EWHS today?   

Journal # 4 (Due 10/20)
What is an event going on in the world, the US, or locally right now that you think is significant? Why is it important to you? 

Journal #5 (Due 11/3): Oedipus’s struggles begin when he stubbornly refuses to listen to others. Is there a time in your life that you think would have turned out differently if you had reacted in another way or adhered to others’ advice? 

Journal #6 (Due 11/17): Free Write.

Journal #8 (Due 12/15) – Overall, do you identify more with Gene or Finny’s character? Think about their personalities and physical attributes. Most importantly, do you see the best in people or do you tend to expect the worst?
