10th Grade World Literature

The 10th Grade World Literature course is a survey of World Literature with a very strong emphasis on the writing process.  The course is divided into six units, each of which will focus on a specific region of the world.  The following information should give you a good idea of what we will cover this semester and what will be expected of you.  Please keep in mind that 10th grade English focuses on writing, therefore, we will be doing quite a bit of it. Tenth grade students will take a state, standardized EOC this year at the conclusion of the course. This is a new test that combines the old 9th grade objective EOC wth the old 10th grade writing test. It will be a combination of objective type questions and open ended questions requring a written response. This is a mandatory state test.

Basic Framework for the Course:

*Six units of literature that will cover various genres (poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, the epic, the short story, and the novel)

*A minimum of six to eight written assignments (at least three of which will be major papers)

*Three novels/Five to Six Novels for Honors (two will be independent study)

*Weekly vocabulary lessons and quizzes/ Weekly SAT quizzes for honors

*Weekly grammar assignments and quizzes

*Development of a writing portfolio

Course Objectives:  Students will:

  • Examine non-literary texts related to cultural studies
  • Research material to use primarily in clarifying their own explanatory responses to situations and literary-based issues
  • Critically interpret and evaluate experiences, literature, language and ideas
