Health and Physical Education Syllabus

Ninth Grade Health/Physical Education Syllabus – Eastern Wayne High School

The purpose of this letter is to familiarize you with the policies and grading practices during your child’s Ninth Grade Health and Physical Education Class at Eastern Wayne High School.  Ninth Grade Health and Physical Education is a Graduation requirement, so it is imperative that your child is successful during class.  In order for your child to be successful in health and physical education he/she must dress out daily and participate in all of the required activities.

  1. No students will be allowed to participate in physical education unless they are wearing the correct gym attire (e.g., shorts, sweatpants, t-shirt, and tennis shoes are required).  It is the responsibility of the student to bring the required gym attire and to dress out for physical education class.  Students who do not bring their gym clothes or shoes to class will receive a minus two for their daily grade.

  2. Dressing out and participation for physical education is mandatory, and therefore, if your child comes to physical education class he/she will be required to dress out and participate.  However, there are two exceptions to this rule.  First, if a student has a medical issue, then a doctor’s note will be required to explain the medical issue and length of time a student is to be excused from participation in physical education class.  Second, if a student has a disability and they are unable to dress out and participate, then a doctor’s note will be required to explain the disability, length of time excused and any limitations that are associated with the student’s disability and participation in physical education class.

  3. A student’s Health class grade will be a combination of Health Tests and Quizzes (27.5%) and Health Classroom Assignments (10%).  A student’s PE class grade will be a combination of Dressing out (27.5%) and Physical Fitness Testing (10%). The student will also take a comprehensive final exam (25%).  Every student starts off each nine weeks’ with a grade of 100.  Each day a student does not dress out and/or participate the student will lose two points off their overall grade. Progress reports will be sent home every three weeks explaining your child’s current grades in health and physical education class.  If your child has below a 70 in class, then a PEP (Personal Improvement Plan) will be developed and you will need to come in for a conference to discuss and sign this PEP.

The PE Department wants your child to have a positive and meaningful experience in Health/Physical Education class at Eastern Wayne High School.  If you have any questions or concerns about this syllabus, please call the school at 919-751-7120.  Thank you for support and cooperation during this semester.
